VSL3 is an excellent product, though pricey. I have people take it for about 1-2 months. The amount of bacteria in it is still just a drop in the ocean compared to the number that grow in one’s gut. Thus probiotic preparations are similar to planting seeds. The more important task is to care and feed them so they multiply to even greater numbers.

What benefits to the body does a probiotic preparation such as VSL 3 # offer?

    Probiotic comparison:

VSL 3 = 450 billion living probiotic bacteria per packet = about $1 a serving. Needs to be refrigerated.

PB 8 = 7 billion probiotic bacteria per capsule – some living, some dead = about $0.25 a serving of 2 capsules. No refrigeration needed (which is why some are dead).

Kefir = approximately 10 to 20 billion living probiotic bacteria per 120 mL (1/2 cup) serving = about $0.50 per serving. Can be made by yourself. Needs to be refrigerated. Generally lactose free.

Probiotics help replenish the approximately 4.5 pounds of probiotic bacteria in the gastrointestinal system in an average adult.

A human being is a symbiotic organism containing about 50 trillion human cells and 500 trillion bacteria.

The probiotic bacteria help improve immune system function – directly communicating with the immune system via peptide signals. They help kill pathogenic bacteria and help the body fight certain cancers.

The probiotic bacteria also help produce nutrients such as folic acid, biotin, and vitamin K.

The probiotic bacteria help promote digestive system health – e.g. reducing diarrhea, gas and bloating associated with antibiotic use or other disturbances of the digestive system, such as irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance (particularly with Kefir)

Probiotic bacteria may reduce the occurrence of allergies in children, vaginal yeast infections and urinary infections in women.

If you are still in Austrailia, I have made a lot of contacts out there.
