Probiotic comparison:
VSL 3 = 450 billion living probiotic bacteria per packet = about $1 a serving. Needs to be refrigerated.
PB 8 = 7 billion probiotic bacteria per capsule – some living, some dead = about $0.25 a serving of 2 capsules. No refrigeration needed (which is why some are dead).
Kefir = approximately 10 to 20 billion living probiotic bacteria per 120 mL (1/2 cup) serving = about $0.50 per serving. Can be made by yourself. Needs to be refrigerated. Generally lactose free.
Probiotics help replenish the approximately 4.5 pounds of probiotic bacteria in the gastrointestinal system in an average adult.
A human being is a symbiotic organism containing about 50 trillion human cells and 500 trillion bacteria.
The probiotic bacteria help improve immune system function – directly communicating with the immune system via peptide signals. They help kill pathogenic bacteria and help the body fight certain cancers.
The probiotic bacteria also help produce nutrients such as folic acid, biotin, and vitamin K.
The probiotic bacteria help promote digestive system health – e.g. reducing diarrhea, gas and bloating associated with antibiotic use or other disturbances of the digestive system, such as irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance (particularly with Kefir)
Probiotic bacteria may reduce the occurrence of allergies in children, vaginal yeast infections and urinary infections in women.

Appreciate the reply Dr Mariano.
August 30, 2012 at 7:30 am #4766MetalMXMemberWhat is a good amount of time for somebody to sleep ?
This always gets me…
maybe i just oversleep due to the habit of it, and enjoying sleep.
I’ve also been using this probiotic called VSL 3# The Living Shield.
What do you think of this probiotic Dr Mariano?
It seems to have the highest concentration of good bacteria in any product in the world. 450 billion CFU per satchet.

Note that thyroid hormone does not function as a signal in a vacuume. Other signals are necessary and metabolic and nutritional factors are necessary for thyroid hormone to work.
What I want to see as one endpoint is a reduction in antithyroid peroxidase antibodies (antimicrosomal antibodies) and antithyroglobulin antibodies to the point the levels are normal.
So it would be worth while for me to recheck my antithyroid antibody levels?
How can i help to control the immune systems proinflammatory signals?

Thank you
🙂August 28, 2012 at 1:50 pm #4764MetalMXMemberI do sometimes experience unusual “nerve” symptoms. Like there are bugs crawling around in my stomach and on my back, arms, legs, head. I don’t know what to make of it. I sometimes have pimples on my back which feel unusual as if my immune system wasn’t able to clear it or something.
I would also say i am very sensitive to any medications. I took an antibiotic called clindamycin for a chest infection in the beginning of last year for two weeks. After this i had a lot of bowel problems for some months after. Which not a lot of people have from simply one or two courses of antibiotics.
I don’t know if this antibiotic triggered all these problems but before taking it i didn’t even have that many problems besides the sleeping problem.
Could this antibiotic cause such GI issues?
But i am also certain if i don’t sleep well these other problems all get worse… and in fact the sleeping problem could be a major factor in all of this. I know i get “nerve” symptoms if i feel stressed too.

Excessive sleep, inability to motivate one’s self are two of several symptoms that occur due to excessive pro-inflammatory signaling.
Depression is an illness that at its heart is a pro-inflammatory condition. So are heart disease, diabetes, irritable bowel disease, allergies, and asthma.
These days, I generally do as thorough immune system evaluation, in addition to a psychological, psychiatric, neurologic, endocrine, metabolic-nutritional evaluation to help determine the underlying causes of a person’s illness and then target them in treatment. Without the immune system evaluation, one is missing an important component to explain why a person is ill.
Dr Mariano. To give you more information i am a 23 year old male. I sleep excessively and wake up many times during the night, i also have found i have woken up with palpitations and lack of breath at times which might be related to not getting enough oxygen during sleep. When i take melatonin 2.5mg i find my sleep quality improves a lot and i sleep much less and much better quality. I also wake up feeling hungry often and find i eat something to get me back to sleep but i have realized this could be due low melatonin levels and/or this sleep problem. When i don’t take melatonin my sleep quality is always much worse.
I have also suffered some IBS symptoms. Aching stomach, pain, constipation, dry mouth, belching, and general IBS symptoms for a while which are on and off.
I generally find i have a low appetite and don’t like to eat much food in general. I eat healthily though. I avoid carbohydrates/sugars and eat vegetables, lean meats and healthy fats (coconut oil etc), and avoid fruits which are high in sugar (fructose). Wheat/dairy i avoid completely as they worsen my IBS Symptoms and cause a lot of bloating for me.
I have hashimoto’s thyroiditis and my thyroid is destroyed. I found a medication which worked for me called ERFA thyroid and i am on 4 grains of this medication my T4/T3 levels are in the high normal range and i’ve been on this medication/dosage for a few years now. The medication works great for me and with it alleviated a lot of my symptoms i’ve had since childhood which we’re thyroid related.
I have done lots of testing in the past hormone related, etc. Thyroid was low and this is treated and my melatonin was low and im taking the two hormones. All other hormones are normal.
I am interested what does the immune system evaluation comprise of?
Also when one has hashimoto’s thyroidits does it predispose a person to other related immune system abnormalities?
May 2, 2011 at 2:52 pm #4698MetalMXMemberCan anyone comment?
I was diagnosed with a motor/sensory peripheral neuropathy and i have been living with these symptoms for a while. Right now im seeing a gastro and i think i have malabsorbtion syndrome i constantly have bowel problems. weird eating habits for years like no desire to eat during the day then waking up hungry in the middle of the night, dry mouth/throat, abdominal distension, gas, urinary difficulties, constipation, mental confusion and peripheral nerve symptoms, numbness and tingling in my hands and feet, muscle twitching etc, alternating feeling cold and hot, muscle weakness etc.
I would love to know what i have… an error in uptake of nutrients into my body something along those lines but their is definitely something wrong with my bowels, i could be harbouring some mysterious genetic disorder causing all this who knows all i know is half the time i feel completely ill and alone in all this.
A lot of the symptoms sound like a malabsorbtion syndrome of some kind.
Any help would be great
September 6, 2010 at 5:42 am #3563MetalMXMemberHow would I get Lyme in Australia? Unlikely
i think it’s a parasitic infection
since the only thing that stopped my
neurological symptoms was albendazole
an anti-helminthic. They are still present
but not to the same degree at all.Any I’ve had these symptoms for nearly
two years.I have hashimotos thyroiditis
on 4 grains of ERFA thyroid
don’t have anymore thyroid symptoms
just this scum infection that

where else it could be but I keep having itchy skin

mimicing the peripheral neuropathy symptoms
I thought I had. Also night sweats, reduced appetite,

regarding what parasites can cause
muscle and possibly CNS infections. It would basically explain all my symptoms

back about normal…May 9, 2010 at 2:33 am #3667MetalMXMemberAnymore updates on how people are going?
April 29, 2010 at 12:47 pm #3666MetalMXMemberIt really is hard to monitor.
When i first got on ERFA Thyroid i hit 36.8C or 96.8F ideal body temperature on 3 grains but soon after few days temps crashed. Now on 20mg of HC and temps are still low but feeling much better. Might need more HC to increase the temps. Interestingly enough they are highest in the morning after sleeping 36.0C but then during the day don’t hold and go low.
I need the 3 grains to be in high normal range but then how much HC do i need 30mg? I don’t know if that is too high or what do i risk suppression is one thing that concerns me.
One thing that is very noticeable i regularly see some eye floaters and know this is related to adrenal issues. Anyone else have this problem?
Light was also blinding me the suns lights in the morning and afternoon now on HC i dont even need glasses when driving down a road and the suns in my face haha.
April 28, 2010 at 10:17 am #3665MetalMXMemberI spoke too soon. Few days after i got off HC i started crashing…. mmm my adrenals are screwed.
On 3 grains and 15-20mg of HC i might even need to lower the thyroid dosage because my temps are still low. One thing i keep feeling is cold like chills or something goosebumps and they are coming from up my back too lol adrenals looks like i will need to be on for a while
April 27, 2010 at 10:38 am #4251MetalMXMemberIt seems to me that these infections which you mentioned might have trigger your spiral into ill health as well as antibiotic use killing off your good bowel flora. You could still maybe have a hidden infection affecting you. What i would do if i was in your position is get a CDSA (Conmplete digestive stool analysis) done with genova diagnostics. This will tell you if you do have any possible infections and if so how to eliminate them. This can screw your whole endocrine system too.
Likely a good complete probiotic supplement would be your friend to reestablish health bowel flora and prevent infections reoccuring as well as fight any ones that might be possibly active but hidden.
I would get off all hormone replacement as well and have baseline readings. If thyroid is the primary cause for example that would cause low T and low IGF-1. All the stress you we’re under has also likely caused a case of adrenal fatigue.
Seems like your are oversupplementing hormones and supplements which is just causing further problems for your body. You need to find the primary cause and once you find it tackle it then all the other pieces of the puzzle will fall into place.
What is your body temperature?
What is your diet at the moment can you give a rough outline? Do you experience hypoglycaemia or feeling shaky or anything that would indicate low blood sugar symptoms?
Do you wake up frequently during the night?
April 26, 2010 at 11:08 pm #4250MetalMXMemberDo you have confirmed low testosterone or significantly low IGF-1 to be on those HRT’s?
In all honesty they can sometimes do more harm than good. Myself i have a autoimmune thyroid condition (low thyroid) which was causing my low testosterone. So once i got on that 3 grains my Testosterone tripled into high normal range. My IGF-1 remained low as well as free Test until i got on cortisol for adrenal support now both are up their and im feeling much better. So by treating thyroid/adrenals for myself which was the main cause i ended up fixing everything else.
Do you have baseline labs when you werent on Hormone replacement therapy?
Please be more specific on which symptoms you are experiencing so i could offer more assistance.
Only thing i could say is with not being able to lose weight and a high amount of Bodyfat you could be having Insulin issues. Insulin Resistance or otherwise which something like GH replacement therapy could be making worse.
How is your digestion? How are your moods? Any hypo symptoms?
April 19, 2010 at 12:50 am #3664MetalMXMemberIm not sure why your moods weren’t so good on Florinef. Maybe because it was messing with your electrolytes or other bodily functions in a negative manner.
What i have to say i am now off HC and my temps seem to have stabilized and i feel great. It seems as though i am experiencing “recovery of adrenal reserve” which i’ve read sometimes the adrenals can come back after HC use. I really feel good right now and so quick to do things its unbelieveable. I just hope this holds.
Although low but stable at 35.8C and 3 grains. Upon reading up on the site STTM low body temperature would be another “symptom” of hypo so i could slowly raise and see if temps increase. Ill keep you guys updated. I probably need more as i am a large structured person at 6″4 with big bones.
