According to the book “Women Under the Influence,” which is an exhaustive 10-year analysis of substance abuse among girls and women, girls and young women are likelier than boys and young men to abuse substances in order to lose weight, relieve stress or boredom, improve their mood, reduce sexual inhibitions, self-medicate depression, and increase confidence.

Women in substance abuse treatment are more than five times likelier than men (69 percent vs. 12 percent) to have been sexually abused as children and girls and women are likelier than men to suffer eating disorders, both of which are major risk factors for substance abuse.

Older women are likelier than older men to self-medicate with alcohol and prescription drugs in order to deal with loneliness, financial insecurity or loss of a spouse.

Could it be for the fact there may be a hidden underlining hormone imbalances due to all the stress and environmental toxins we may be exposed to as a society which could be altering ones production of neurotransmitters to make them look for an outlet in the first place. For God sake i am seeing women in their 20’s withhormone profiles of women in perimenopause. Honestly this is rather disturbing and one can only imagine how many more out there are suffering the same thing with out even knowing it. Lets factor in 80% of the population is vitamin D deficient, and >80% iodine deficiency. GEE no wonder cancer is on the rise like crazy. Then factor in the genetic mutations which are showing up in people now. To put icing on the cake most women in 40’s have been through 2-3 battered relationships, sexual abused as a child by loved ones,

Could the extreme dysregulation of the HPTA due to “all stress” drive a person to drink due to the fact of they are looking for a way to balance their brain through articifical means such as alcohol. When profiling we look for past drug abuse and majority of the time it is found to have battered past as you perviously mentioned.
