Selegiline is an interesting alternative to SSRIs (serotonin reuptake inhibitors).
Before SSRIs were developed, we primarily had the Tricyclic Antidepressants and the Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors.
Selegiline is an MAOI.
MAOIs largely increase serotonin but treatment is complicated by large numbers of interactions with other medications and the need for a specific diet to avoid death.
Since SSRIs also increase serotonin, and the decade of the 90s became the serotonin decade (where serotonin became the answer to everything mental), SSRIs have largely replaced MAOIs.
However, MAOIs also increase dopamine significantly. For sex drive, and reduction of premature ejaculation, theoretically, they would have an advantage over SSRIs.
Selegiline’s advantage over other MAOIs is that at lower doses, it allows one to avoid having to change one’s diet. Other than that, it is similar to the other MAOIs. However, there is a transdermal patch for Selegiline that allows Selegiline to bypass the stomach and use larger doses while avoiding the change in diet also. This allows higher dosing if necessary.
July 14, 2009 at 8:17 pm #2119BlackJackMemberThere was a time i was able to last 5-10minutes…. maybe it was the selengine and no the clomid?
i was on both of them together but i dont know which one was the reason for me being able to last.
July 14, 2009 at 8:27 pm #2120BlackJackMemberDr M. do you think a low dose of SSRI is worth trying?
what about Cialis over an SSRI?

When it comes to SSRI treatment of any condition, one has to keep in mind that the dose has to be customized to the person. The dose also has to be lowered when encountering dose-related side effect such as loss of libido. At a low enough dose, the loss of libido may not be perceptible. For example, women are much more sensitive to loss of libido or anorgasmia from an SSRI. But at a lower dose that what causes loss of libido, they are capable of orgasms. For example, with Lexapro, some patients take 1/8th of a 10 mg tablet – a sliver. This is enough for them.
Using Cialis may help one’s confidence in being able to maintain an erection. This boost in confidence would then allow one’s body/mind to relax and lower norepinephrine production, which would then reduce premature ejaculation. It is an indirect rather than direct effect. If, however, the person still worries and stresses out about premature ejaculation, Cialis won’t help. The trigger point for orgasm is still lowered by excessive norepinenephrine signaling.
July 15, 2009 at 3:40 pm #2121BlackJackMemberI could see half tab of cialis and a glass or so of wine or shot of vodka would be a good solution to the problem,, i dont see any harm in doing this say once every other week just to spice things up in the bedroom?
would you agree Dr. M?

I can’t agree as to the safety of what you are doing. I only give medical advice to my own patients. This is primarily an educational forum. I would recommend you consult with your physician or qualified health care provider prior to attempting any treatment.

A single glass of wine or shot of vodka causes enough liver damage and inflammation to render that day’s growth hormone production ineffective. This is one reason alcohol ages a person.
In some people, a glass of wine may have health benefits, particularly the red wines which have Resveratrol – a mild phytoestrogen with other useful properties.
However, I tend to prefer the non-alcoholic route since there are often better solutions to the use of alcohol. But each person has to decide for themselves, with the help of their physicians, the risk/benefit ratio for alcoholic beverage use.

FWIW, virtually every alcoholic I have known looks significantly older than their chronological age.
July 16, 2009 at 2:41 am #2123BlackJackMemberi dont think so…if anything its due the fact they smoke…
i know 3 people that drink heavily, they dont smoke just drink and they look very very youngJuly 16, 2009 at 2:47 am #2100DrMariano2Participant@BlackJack 816 wrote:

Perhaps you haven’t been around a lot of alcoholics. Thus, you may not have a point of reference for comparison. As a psychiatrist, I have seen a ton of them. I stopped making the assumption I can tell age from appearance when it comes to mental patients, particularly those who abuse alcohol or other drugs. This was because so many 50+ appearing people were actually in their 30s.
Teenagers and young adults make up one of the largest groups of alcoholics. Perhaps this brings on the misperception that alcoholics look younger.
Perhaps some people can drink a lot of alcohol, but because of genetics, they look young. And perhaps they stand out more than the average alcoholic. Thus, by using them as the model for what an alcoholic looks like, it gives a wrong impression of what alcohol does to the body.
When one looks at identical twins, when one is an alcoholic and the other does not drink, the alcoholic twin appears much older.

so you believe everyone should avoid alcohol all together and not even drink in small amounts?

i have noticed that if i do a lot of foreplay, i will eventually lose my erection when it comes time for sex.. it seems that if i have one burst of energy and if i dont use it, i lose it..
is this related to testosteroen or possible high norephinen?
September 13, 2009 at 5:45 am #2128MebigusmallMemberWhat if one is already on a high dose of SSRI and still ejaculates kind of quickly or the affect of the effect wears off after a few weeks.
