Can one test actually for Oxytocin levels within his/her body? I know it is a hormone and neurotransmitter. I understand that it is responsible for someone caring for another. If it has such powerful effects on the body, as it strongly affects the mind and behavior; could this indeed cause affects within an individual where they withdrawal and act out of the ordinary in a relationship, causing them to hold feelings inside them, where they are not able to express (communicate), openly? Almost like something was just turned off inside of them, where a button was pressed, and no longer are emotions and feelings allowed to be seen.
September 15, 2009 at 9:24 pm #3476GenoMember:confused:I have wondered about that too in the past. The only thing I could come up with is after having my latest labs reviewed by my Doctor, who is a Psychiatrist, is that my labs indicated that my brain is not making “Serotonin” I’ve been on Zoloft for about 15 years which is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, so on my next visit with him, I will try to find out more as to why ” I seem not to be able to FEEL “Love” “Joy” etc…. and that experience which “Oxytocin” is supposed to help humans experience. Hope this helped ?

Geno please make an appointment to see Dr Mariano because hes right in your own back yard. Plus you need a full hormone panel because these can be responsible for modulating neurotransmitters signaling.
September 16, 2009 at 6:04 am #3475shan_e_wilsonMemberThank you for sharing your thoughts Geno. This has just been something that I have wondered, but don’t really hear a lot about. I understand that females tend to produce more “Oxytocin”, rather than males; and this is why they tend to be more the nurturing type. With this in thought..it made me think of how the proper or improper amount of “Oxytocin”, in one’s body may affect the outcome of how he/she responds emotionally and what he/she can or is not able to feel.
I personally think that stress and depression from “toxic stress”, may affect this. In our society today, we have such a burden of the typical profile of an individual having a difficult workplace, or running a home and or raising a family, ect. These are the most adverse kinds of stress, because they are POWERFUL and CONSTANT. I’m not a doctor, but I think this stress helps cause imbalances in hormones and neurotransmitters, which in effect..causes changes in our moods and mental function. In the case of depression, the body lacks sufficient serotonin (the neurotransmitter necessary to maintain positive mood). Thinking about how sensitive our bodies are..it really is important to make sure that our hormones and neurotransmitter signaling is correct.
I would agree with the advice that hardasnails1973 gave you. If you are able to seek help from Dr. Mariano..it would be beneficial to you. That is a long time to be on meds for 15 yrs and not feel different.

You guys are correct ! Yes, I did go see Dr. M. First visit was Aug, 2nd was Sept 11,09 !! I am lucky in that I only live 30 minutes from his office ! Wow!!! some of you guys might say, but…… I am 46 yrs old, Disabled due to my Poor Mental Health, and on SSI Disabililty, which get’s me a monthly income of $850.00 to live on !!!! I have Medi-Care etc…. but 15 years of using that system trying to find good healthcare has gotten me “No-where!!” I sufferred way too long with health issues, so I scraped up every penney I could get my hands on to go see Dr. M !!! I was evaluated medically 110% by him and put on a great treatment program. Still to early to see any results, but I am very, very optimistic. The Dr. is a medical genious, from what I have seen so far !!!
