Dr M. If the culprit is constant low blood suger or hypoglycemia (not sure if they are the same thing), what could one due to raise it? As I mentioned I feel much better if a eat something high in sugar, such as a large sugary bowl of cereal. Thank you!
Chronic low blood sugar or hypoglycemia may indicate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal dysregulation resulting in low cortisol signaling in response to stress. Cortisol is one of the primary signals to the liver to produce sugar via a process called gluconeogenesis.
Eating sugar helps reduce the sensation of hypoglycemia.
However, the elevated blood sugar that results tells the brain to stop making ACTH, which then slows down adrenal production of cortisol. Once the body increases insulin to absorb the excess blood sugar, the lowered cortisol production would result in a crash.
Generally, when someone wants to stabilize blood sugar due to hypoglycemia, they would eat frequently. They would eat proteins or complex carbohydrates or nuts or fruits. This way, there aren’t the big ups and downs that make a person go on a rollercoaster with blood sugar.
