My primary care doctor just put me on metformin a week ago. My insulin was around 110 and I think the high end of the scale was ( ? -95) on the chart range. Blood sugar was 40 and the high end on chart was (? -20) so thats double. I did not fast the night (wasn’t told to) before so could not be accurate insulin and blood sugar numbers. Since being put on metformin, I was up extremely exhausted. I feel like shit all day. My thyroid is also whacked out too even though I’m on meds for it. I’m sure thyroid contributes to feeling like garbage, but never felt exhausted the way I do from thyroid issues until taking metformin. People at work have made comments that I basically look like shit everyday, but in nicer way of course.

I did go hyper on thyroid meds only for a month before making changes, but didn’t lose a pound, but actually gained weight. Not sure how that’s possible but it happened.

Anyone have this experience on metformin?

If it’s metformin then I’d rather come off and not make myself feel worse than I already feel from thyroid issues.

RErun lab work again in fasted state and if they are still abnormal then 3 hour glucose tolerance test with insulin. If taking metformin makes your fatigue most likely it could be dropping your sugar too low. Again we only brought it to the attention of your GP, but he should investigated it further which we will do on next blood work. I always have to clean up the mess..

Why do you think some drs don’t investigate health problems fully? Or do they feel they are doing all they can by making treatment decisions from a limited number of labs or consults?

Your ‘hyper’ symptoms from thyroid meds could have been, in actuality, low cortisol from adrenal stress from the thyroid meds. If so, it would make sense that you would react the way you are to Metformin. If you read the insert, it say not to use with adrenal problems. I had the same reaction, than read the insert, and wondered why in hell my doctor prescribed a med for me that would worsen my low cortisol symptoms???
