everybody knows your name. Thanks to pmgamer for posting the site over at Meso. This site will actually make my job over there easier. One recent poster asked about E2 and dopamine. I told him to read Dr. Mariano’s threads. I think he was upset with me.

Hope the book from Dr. Mariano is coming soon. A group of psychologists affiliated with Harvard have formed a behavioral medicine training group. They have solicited for postdoctoral students to receive instruction, etc. for a while. One of the group sent out an email with the promise of a lecture on how an under-active thyroid can result in symptoms akin to depression. I replied back with a long email about other hormone imbalances that can mimic the same. Dr. Mariano the world awaits. I will in the future refer the group to Definitive Minds.

All this is about saying that I’m glad to see the site and forum up and running.

    Welcome, Pat!

I am currently knee-deep studying the connections between the immune system and mental function. What is exciting about it is that it completes the circuits in the body that determine behavior (which start with the nervous system and endocrine system). For example, pro-inflammatory cytokines can shut down thyroid function and adrenal function, and trigger defensive nervous-system behavioral programs that end up being depression. These triggered defensive programs can even explain many of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia! Psychoneuroimmunology is a field in mental health that was started in the 1970s and is still in its infancy. However, when combine with behavioral neuroendocrinology, metabolism and nutrition, it provides many of the missing pieces.

Interestingly, one of my patients recently asked if what I was doing is like finding needles in a haystack. This analogy is actually not accurate. The better analogy to what I am doing is to approach a haystack and attempt understand each straw and needle and its role in creating the entire haystack.

Still working on the book. Given the huge chunk of information I am digesting with the psychoneuroimmunology literature, it will take a while to add this to my schema.

However, everyone is welcome who is interested discussing as broad and deep subject as we are discussing in this forum.

    Pat,
Welcome my friend. Its good to see you are finally able to join us. I send you an email many moons ago notifying that Dr Mariano’s board was operational. My fiancee is starting to prep for her comps right now for masters degree. I am trying to bring some of the students from her University here to help them be educated by some of the best information presented on line. The new generations of psychologists have been opportunity to learn critical information that will help them to think out side the box then what is taught traditionally in school. I see this forum to be a great learning tool for all.

Thanks to pmgamer and Dr. Mariano for taking the time to put this forum together! AND…I still plan on one day spending the money to fly from Louisiana to California to be a patient of Dr. Mariano. I need to convince my wife and turn it into a Napa Valley trip 😀

HAN, I didn’t want to grow your ego :p Just kidding. I didn’t know you helped also…sorry. Your activity on these forums is one of the primary reasons I read 🙂 Any way, I figured you might have been pissed at me since we don’t talk much any more (wow, my E2 must be high, that sounded like a girl)
