Since I was 17 years old (54 now) I have had OCD I believe it was triggered one night after smoking some pot. Back then nobody really knew how to properly treat it. I also had some bouts of depression from time to time but was always able to manage myself out of them using techniques in the book Feeling Good by Dr David Burns. When I turned 50 all hell broke loose and almost in an instance I had what I can only describe as an nervous breakdown bringing upon me extreme OCD / depression /anxiety and more fun stuff. I really wanted to get over it without using drugs but it was so bad I gave Lexapro a try. Wow! it was like I was on speed and I couldn’t sleep much at all. It also increased my OCD and anxiety to extreme levels. Agitation was a major side effect as well. I reduced it but it was still too intense. I did stick this out for three months however and then went through hell getting off of it. Its now almost 5 years later and some things have improved. I went to an OCD specialist in New York City DR Steven Phillipson and went through CBT therapy with ERP and have been for the most part OCD free for a couple of years now. The depression is something else altogether. Nothing that has worked in the past has helped. I have tried Herbs Vitamins and therapy all to no avail. My Dr on my request has let me try Testosterone therapy even though I was not that low. 450 on the total but 5.9 on the free. I have been on this treatment for 4 months without any relief of depressive symptoms. The Testosterone did raise my levels to over 900 and the free to 15. I do have a high SHBG however of 62. In 1991 I had thyroid cancer and had a total thyroidectomy. I have been on T4 synthroid only up to 3 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago I went to another DR who wanted to try some T3 along with the T4 so he reduced my T4 in half and added Cytomel 10mcgs a day. Although it stimulated me like 10 cups of coffee my depression lifted right after on the first day of Cytomel. The depression stayed gone for about 10 days and then returned. I added another 5mcgs of Cytomel and bingo it went away again for 10 days. During tis time my blood pressure went up to 160/100 during mid day for about 3 hours. My DR gave me Diovan and although it works I am concerned that it might be the reason I am depressed again. Do blood pressure drugs have depression as a side effect? Is the positive effect of the cytomel just temporary because it was like a temp shock treatment and now I am just back to square one. My thyroid labs were not great when I switched to the new protocol. I had a free T3 of 2.8 free T4 of 1.83 TSH .020 and a reverse T3 of 496 which was high. I think I have given the Testosterone experiment long enough and want to stop it. Maybe the thyroid treatment will eventually help me. I am going to stop the Diovan for a few days to see if that is what is bothering me. I really don’t want to take another SSRI but in the end I may have to. Dr Mariano Is there one that does not cause so much agitation? Thanks for having this board.

    Adrenals? Have you tried HC?

    Post Thyroid ranges.

Ever try adding an Iodoral tablet to help get RT3 down?

OCD tendencies are linked to Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate Deficiency (Active B6). I would get on some P5P 25-50mg per day and see how that helps your OCD as well as depressive symptoms since P5P it will boost your serotonin levels.

Also SAMe is a great natural anti-depressant again something else you could try for your depression. If you are not already on a comprehensive multi-vitamin/mineral supplement i would get on one. Ideally with Vitamins A-E, B Vitamins, Folinic Acid, Methylcobalamin – B12, P5P as well as Zinc, selenium, chromium, molybdenum and manganese.

Have you been tested for Pyroluria? If not i would do a Urine Krptopyrolle Test because many depressed people have Pyroluria particularly long-term unresolved depression which doesn’t go away. Pyroluria is a genetic metabolic disorder brought on by stress and runs in families it is characterized by depletion of Zinc and Vitamin B6 as well as manganese and arachidonic acid (Omega 6 fatty acid).

    Here is a link: http://www.drkaslow.com/html/pyroluria.html

Another thing you could do is check your Red Blood Cell Fatty Acids. This urine tests measures Essential Fatty Acids in your blood and shows imbalances which can certainly effect your mood. Depression is linked to low EFA’s, low cholesterol & Imbalances in fatty acids due to incorrect diet.

Have a look at the sample profile.

Regarding your thyroid with your High Reverse T3 as wondering mentioned might be a adrenal issue so the cheapest route for you would be to do a 8am Cortisol & ACTH while on Thyroid meds to see what is happening. The other option is a Cortisol Saliva test which can also be done at genova diagnostics.

I am sure you will get this fixed mate you’ve come to the right place to find answers.
