Thank you.
Hypothyroidism is a common cause of anhidrosis – the inability to perspire. Anhidrosis, in some cases, can be life-threatening since the body can overheat, leading to heatstroke.
Some causes include:
- Impaired autonomic nervous system function, e.g. from hypothyroidism, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, amyloidosis, Sjogren’s syndrome, Ross syndrome, Horner syndrome, trauma affecting sympathetic nervous system function, Guillain-Barre syndrome, etc.
- Skin conditions. e.g. burns damaging the sweat glands, genetic illness affecting the skin affecting sweat gland function (e.g. hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, Ichthyosis, Atopic Eczema, Psoriasis, Scleroderma, Leprosy), blockage of sweat glands from antiperspirants, creams, etc.
- Medications blocking Acetylcholine, e.g. cogentin, amitriptyline, antihistamines, etc.
- Dehydration
- Etc.
