I’ve been on HC for about 10 months– varying from 20-40 mgs.
I’ve also switched to T3 for about 3 months due to hight RT3.; that’s been about 3 months.
For awhile though, I haven’t felt the need to take my HC (or Cytomel) at the scheduled times. I’m not getting the low cortisol symptoms, so is that an indication that I can start to wean?
Thank you!
One should always consult with one’s physician or other qualified health care provider before making changes with one’s treatment.
Once a person is doing well and there are not structural problems with the adrenal glands, one can see if Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Dysregulation has been corrected by attempting to taper off glucocorticoid treatment.
In James Wilson’s book, Adrenal Fatigue…, he advocated regularly attempting to taper off treatment to determine if it was needed. Generally, he thought treatment would last up to two years once life stresses were addressed through behavior or life-style changes.
From my point of view, an adrenal support treatment with hydrocortisone, should once in a while be tapered down to see if it is needed, once a person is doing well for a given length of time – such as 6 months to a year. That would be the only way to check if HPA Axis regulation was restored by the rest of the treatment.
