Hi there,
I’m new to this site and was hoping for some guidance.3 years ago I switched from Synthyroid to Armour without knowing about adrenals. I really wasn’t getting any better despite all the supplements I was taking. Switched doctors and began trying every and all thyroid combos, but kept getting worse.
In the meantime, found out I had Celiac Disease so began a GF diet, but after a year that didn’t help my health much. A saliva test for adrenals showed depressed all levels. Further testing showed adrenal antibodies. I started HC a year ago. Began at 20, then 30, then 40mg but it was like taking a sugar pill. Tried 6mg of Medrol for awhile, but it was the same thing. Switched to T3 only to see if that was it – just kept getting worse.
In December I went to a “hormone specialist” who was willing to go much higher on the HC, convinced it was an absorption or cortisol resistance problem because I just felt nothing good from the HC. He increased me to 120mg + where I developed high cortisol symptoms. Then he increased my T3 to 125mcg. This was 2 months ago and I began shaking. Began decreasing the HC and T3.
During all of this he also added in Florinef and potassium. I’ve been on dhea and testosterone as well. Recent labs showed my progesterone/estrogen have plummeted.
So…….I’m still shaking all this time later. Doc said had to be low cortisol so he switched me to prednisolone for a bit and increased just to see, but it didn’t help. My body is in shock!
Currently I’m on 25 T3 and 70mg HC (weaning down). Last week I found out I have Lyme Disease, which I think could explain a lot right?
I am on so many meds/hormones now I don’t know what symptom is what anymore. I can’t sleep- haven’t slept in 6 months, either can’t fall asleep or wake too early. My body is shutting down.
My plan is to start treating lyme, wean down the HC……I don’t know if anyone has any great ideas to help me through this awful mess.
Thank you.

One has a sweet spot on both cortisol and thyroid. Some “hormone specialist”get so fixed on hormone that they forget about the other hormones. As raising other hormones above the proper range can cause a horrible cascade of other hormones such as progesterone, insulin, testosterone, dhea, estrogen. Once a person gets above a safe range of HC then the Dr should look to other areas that have not been addressed. Some times these specialist start cranking up one specific hormone then if there are no clincal response they will start adding in other hormones at huge dosages in order to offset the imbalance created in the first place. This method is also a good way to generate revenue for the Dr as well to keep you coming back on a 4-6 weeks basis. After being on the boards for over almost 7 years one can start to appreciate certain experts in the field. I have referred a lot of people to Dr Mariano because of his understanding the complexity of intervention of hormones and human mind. Realthyroidhelp board should remove that Dr’s name because he has put a few people in the ER and have brain washed his clients into thinking that he is going to help them. I guess it will come to a point that until some ones dies will people start to wake up. There are also could be a psychological opponent to this our potential the excessive HC could have even contributed to your depression. I would look at your estrogen levels in relationship to other hormone to see if this could be affecting thyroid function at the cellular level.
