Since taking 500 mgs of 99% trans resveratrol I have been noticing increasing joint pains and feeling like symptoms of e2 deficiency. Resveratrol has been known in clincal studies in rats to lower copper serum levels at high dosages. If some one was low already then this could propose a problem.
I have low copper serums which has been unresolved by copper supplementation and I am wondering if there is a problem with copper transport mechanism. I have been having problems with low copper for a long time in the serum and also low in hair analysis despite supplelemtation.
I have been taking 50 mgs of iron 500 mgs of vitamin C away from other supplements 2 times a day. My ferritin was tested at 44 after doing this for 4 weeks which makes me wonder if there is a factor dealing with copper ultization affecting the uptake of iron into the cell.
I do take zinc at 50 mgs but this taken before going to bed so it should not complete with other minerals.
I am pale as a ghost despite being out in the sun. I know that copper is needed for the enzyme tyrosinase which is needed to make melanin in the skin. I have been getting premature gray hairs which i never had before. I know copper is needed for proper keratin of hair skin and nails. This has been one major mysteries that has been eluding me for almost 4 years when I discovered it 4 years ago, but Dr’s completely over look it said I was normal range. I have been hovering at 2 point above the low end range for over 4 years and have all the signs of copper deficiency, but do not know how to correct it. I do not know if its a transport, absorption, or ultization issues. I just had a copper urine test done and waiting on the results.
I understand that ceruoplasm is released by the adrenals. I am on cortef, but what part of the adrenal is responsible for releasing this enzyme?
If one has wilson disease will the urine 24 hour determine this or does a liver biopsy is needed?
Since reading your article on vitamin C I have reduced it to 500 mgs liposal 2 times a day with my iron.
I have been at my witts ends to try to understand this abnormality that has left Dr’s and my self baffled. I fall into 2 of the catagory of wilson disease which kinds of scares me as my symptoms can reflect it to 100% with emotional, mental , and physical characteristics. I am just looking for answers and I know this copper imbalance is one of the missing keys and has been for over 4 years.

I hear varying things. Some feel it is very potent, others unsure, say it depends on form, bioavailability.
The research on longevity is very interesting. I have to imagine big pharma sees something promising as they are researching it.

Resveratrol has two interesting effects which may not be of use to some people:
1. Resveratrol acts as a mild estrogen. It blocks stronger estrogens such as Estradiol. In the absence of Estradiol, it acts as an estrogen agonist.
2. Resveratrol stimulates Nitric Oxide production.
IRON:
In regard to iron, it takes months to bring up ferritin levels.
If the level is not rising, I would consider a different iron formulation to see if absorption is a problem.
June 22, 2009 at 1:42 pm #2078DrMariano2ParticipantHere’s a good link for Wilson’s Disease: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1153622-overview
This is one disease which can be easily missed unless one keeps it in mind.
The diagnostic criteria include: Parkinsonian symptoms (rigidity, slowed movements, tremor), Keyser-Fleisher rings, low ceruloplasmin level, high urinary copper excretion, symptoms of liver disease. Mental illness may be present.
The eye exam is important. If the textbook Kayser-Fleisher rings around the cornea are found, then medical-school training would kick in a suspicion of Wilson’s Disease. The problem is that the disease is very rare, thus one many never see such rings and would miss it easily as a variant eye color. It doesn’t stand out like the white rings on the iris indicating high cholesterol levels.
An ophthalmologist or optometrist can do a slit-lamp exam to look for Kayser-Fleisher rings – greenish-yellow or brown colored border of the cornea.
Low serum ceruloplasmin, low serum copper, and high urinary copper excretion would be suspicious signs for Wilson’s disease. But at times urinary copper excretion can even be normal.
Ceruloplasmin is made in the liver, not the adrenals. In Wilson’s disease, copper can’t be stored in Ceruloplasmin or excreted in bile, thus copper accumulates in the body, causing damage. Ceruloplasmin carries about 90% of copper in the blood, the rest is in albumin. Ceruloplasmin is also an enzyme which oxidizes iron from the Fe2+ (ferrous) to the Fe3+ (ferric) state, which is necessary before iron can be carried in the blood by Transferrin.
Interestingly, if iron can’t oxidized, it may accumulate in the liver, possibly pancreas and brain and other organs. Anemia may result since the iron can’t be transported. There may be low serum iron, though ferritin may be high.

In my last test my prealbumin was one point from being out the low range. Taking lots of vitamin D to keep my levels in the health range 60-70 may also cause depletion of vitamin A.
When taking iron it has also been noted that this can also deplete vitamin A as well. Could low vitamin A actually result in low pre albumin? Vitamin A is highly interlinked in the protein binding of retinol to pre albumin. Exactly how the mechanism works I am unsure of. Vitamin A is also needed for proper protein synthesis. I am also noticing my night vision has gotten alot weaker in the past few months as well. Upon looking into this I found that vitamin A deficiency also is linked to poor night vision. I seem to speculate taking high dosage of vitamin D has an impact on vitamin A status. I have not found proof of this clinically, but will keep looking.June 24, 2009 at 3:01 am #2079DrMariano2Participant@hardasnails1973 268 wrote:

It provides up to 10 times the amount of various vitamins. Such diets provide the nutrients simultaneously, thus reducing the problems that occur when vitamins are taken singly or in small groups at a time.
If one Google’s or does a Medline search on the discussed topics, one will get various articles and studies on the subject.
Vitamin D intake increases the need for Vitamin A
Vitamin A improves response to Iron supplementation.
Iron supplementation reduces the release of Vitamin A from the liver, keeping it stored in the liver.
These interactions argue for eating real foods that have high nutritional density – such as traditional diets rather than modern diets.
A good reference for high density nutrition is: http://www.amazon.com/Nourishing-Traditions-Challenges-Politically-Dictocrats/dp/0967089735/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1245812380&sr=8-1
Weston Price’s account is in this book: http://www.amazon.com/Nutrition-Physical-Degeneration-Weston-Price/dp/0916764206/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1245812442&sr=8-1
June 24, 2009 at 3:49 am #2081hardasnails1973MemberI have been to his web site and it is amazing how people when taking out of their environment and placed on a SAD are prone to illness and premature deal. With many of my clients I always recommend alot of nutrient dense foods which are not found in typical american diet. Butter has been replaced with margerine I just looked on a margerine label and so no vitamin A, D, as the ingredients. When clients are told to eat organic butter they comment “Thats fat and I am suppose to eat it” I politely point out to the fact that people grand parents rarely died of cancer, but rather natural causes. Look at the people tropics they live off of cocconut based foods and are the healhiest in the world. When revamping a persons eating habits to a more healthy lifestyle goes against all principle that are taught in traditional nutrition classes. One client had a pituitary tumor that had grown over the years. After changing their lifestyle, and nutrition. The person went back in 3 months to check up on it and it was gone. The dr’s were baffled that a 4 cm tumor just magically disappeared. The client highly believes that it was his change in lifestyles and eating habits that were responsible for it. Weston price has always been on of my all times favorite nutritionist to research.
